Dykes to Watch Out For at the London Olympics

Looking for someone to cheer for that shares something with you other than nationality? I’ve compiled a list of all the out queer women competing in London later this month, so you can keep tabs on Team Dyke 2012. Enjoy - and good luck to these seven incredible women!

Marilyn Agliotti

Agliotti, 33, plays on the Dutch field hockey team. She has competed in the Olympics previously, when the Dutch team won the gold in the 2008 Beijing games. Agliotti is happily married to another woman and has spoken out about the necessity for a more accepting environment in the field hockey world.

Judith Arndt

Arndt, 35, cycles professionally for Germany. This year in London, she qualified for three events: the women’s individual time trial, the women’s road race, and the women’s team pursuit. Although she has competed in every summer Olympics since 1996, her only medals are from 1996 and 2008, when she won the bronze in the individual pursuit and the silver in the women’s road race, respectively. She is well-known for giving the German Cycling Federation the finger after she won the silver, because she believed they would have been able to win the gold if her partner had been accepted onto the team as well. Arndt currently lives with her partner, retired cyclist Petra Rossner. Together they announced after the 2006 World Championships that they would like to adopt a child. They have both been named Gay Games Ambassadors.

Seimone Augustus

Augustus, 28, plays forward on the USA’s basketball team. At this year’s games, she and the rest of her team will be defending the gold they won in Beijing. In 2010, her career paused while she had surgery to remove fibroids, but she is now healthy and playing for the Minnesota Lynx and the WBC Spartak Moscow Region. This May, she became engaged to her fiancée, LaTaya Varner.

Natalie Cook

Cook, 37, plays beach volleyball for Australia. Cook made her Olympic debut the same year beach volleyball did, in 1996 in Atlanta, where she and her partner Kerri Pottharst won the bronze medal. She has competed in every Summer Olympics since then, and in the 2000 Sydney games she and Pottharst took home the gold. This year she will be playing alongside Tamsin Hinchley, with whom she finished fifth in 2008. Cook is currently living in Brisbane with her wife and fellow volleyballer Sarah Maxwell.

Imke Duplitzer

Duplitzer, 36, fences for Germany. She will be competing in two events: individual épée and team épée. Duplitzer has competed in the summer games since 2000, and in 2004 she and her teammates won silver. At the Beijing games, she refused to take part in the Opening Ceremony, protesting human rights abuses committed by the Chinese government. She and 39 other Olympic athletes also signed onto an open letter to Hu Jintao regarding Tibet and other human rights concerns. Duplitzer has a daughter with her life partner, a teacher, and has been relatively open about her sexuality.

Megan Rapinoe

Rapinoe, 27, is a midfielder on the USA’s national football team. Although she has played for the national team since July 2006, this will be her Olympic debut, as she had to sit out the Beijing games due to injuries. During her performance in the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup, in which her team were runners-up, she was featured as ESPN’s Next Level Player of the Week for completing 5 of 10 crosses while the rest of her team had completed none (of 18 attempts). Rapinoe only came out this month. She and Australian footballer Sarah Walsh have been together three years.

Lisa Raymond

Raymond, 38, plays women’s doubles tennis for the USA. She has also appeared in this same even in the 2004 Olympic Games, but she and her partner made it only to the quarter-final. However, she has 11 Grand Slam titles, 6 in women’s and the rest in mixed. She has played alongside other lesbian tennis greats, such as Martina Navratilova and Rennae Stubbs, the latter of whom she dated at one point. In London she is partnered with Liezel Huber, who is sadly heterosexual.

Did I miss someone? Let me know!
